Mull

On our ferry journey from Oban to Mull, we passed three great ocean passenger liners, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria which were gathering to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Cunard Line.
I have never fancied going on a cruise but I have to admit that these ships certainly looked impressive!

Boat trips were made to :-
  • Staffa to view the fantastic basalt columns at Fingal's Cave (sailing to the obligatory music of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture),
  • Lunga - spending a few hours with the magnificent and often comical Puffins
  • Iona - in the hope of seeing, maybe even photographing the elusive Corncrake and visiting the old ruins of the monastery founded by St Columba

On Mull itself, there were wonderful sightings - male Hen Harriers, numerous Short-eared Owls, various seabird and wader species. The birding throughout the trip was memorable as always even if photographic opportunities were limited.
