Hungary - Hortobagy National Park (Feb 2016)
In February 2016, I travelled with SHETLAND WILDLIFE to the Hortobágy National Park in eastern Hungary, as a member of a group led by Mick Durham.
Based at the Bibic Nature Lodge, Balmazujvaros (near Debrecen), we had a superb week photographing the superb wildlife of the area, targeting in particular the magnificent White-tailed Eagles.
Over the course of our week, we had the opportunity to visit a different hide, provided by Sakertour, each day.
Some of these hides had been set up to attract the White-tailed Eagle, others for the Common Buzzard and yet others for a variety of woodland species.
Regrettably, the anticipated snowfall did not arrive although it was certainly very cold and frosty. All the different pools were covered in ice, as were many of the tracks where ice covered puddles would crack loudly under our feet as we walked to the various hides in the early morning, well before the sun had risen.
