The Mountains

Our days in Bulgaria were spent around Sliven, using two locations with hides.
The hide in the mountains set up for Golden Eagle photography, and a second site built in woodlands at a lower height, with a reflection pool to attract woodland species.

Everywhere was cold and snow covered, however so high up in the mountains much of the snow had been blown away from the open areas by the strong winds which blew incessantly.

Our last night was spent in Sofia, more convenient for our flights home. We still found the time on the final morning to spend a while at a nearby ski resort.

Here were Nutcrackers - in greater numbers and closer than I had ever seen them before - sometimes literally just a few feet away.
The local red squirrels also put in an appearance looking much darker to those we have at home, with their thick winter coats.
